I’m Patricia Lopez, 30. By the time I reached the coast, the air smelled like ripe mango and salt. I checked into a Modern Airbnb Vacation Apartment in Jaco Beach and gave myself permission to say yes to almost everything.
Four anchors kept me honest: Surfing on Jaco Beach, Hookah at Mynt Lounge in Jaco, Isla Damas Mangrove Tour, and Ridiculous Burgers Restaurant because the name dared me. Everyone was helpful and friendly, from drivers to shopkeepers.
I bounced between Jaco Walk and short rides to Playa Hermosa, Herradura, and down the road toward Esterillos for a wide-open beach. Buses were easy; Ubers were quick; taxis were everywhere. I felt safe, relaxed, and curious in the best way.
I bought a coconut and the vendor laughed when I asked for a spoon. He handed me a straw and said, “pura vida.”
Later, I stepped into Mynt Lounge Jaco—low lights, good music—and then wandered to a small casino before calling it. The walk home felt like a warm exhale.
Jaco gave me exactly what I wanted: motion, rest, and a few stories I can’t wait to retell.
