I’m Lauren Patterson, 29, and I chose Jaco Beach because I wanted a trip that balanced wellness with fun. I wanted to surf, stretch, eat well, and still go out dancing when I felt like it. Jaco handled all of that effortlessly. I stayed in a Downtown Jaco Beach Airbnb Apartment that was quiet enough for rest but close enough that I could be at the water or a restaurant in just a few minutes.

Four experiences shaped my idea of “balance” here: Surfing on Jaco Beach, a rejuvenating visit to Serenity Spa in Herradura, dinner at Green Room Restaurant, and a full-on fun night at Jaco Blu Beach Club. Surfing gave me a daily reminder that I’m stronger than I think, Serenity Spa helped my muscles forgive me, Green Room fed me like I was at a wellness retreat, and Jaco Blu let me dance barefoot by the pool with the ocean just steps away.

Most mornings started with either yoga in my apartment or a quiet walk on Jaco Beach, the waves rolling in as the sun came up over the hills. After that, I’d surf or explore. Taxis and Ubers took me to Herradura and the Los Sueños marina, and buses made it easy to go farther down the coast toward Esterillos and Bejuco. Everything about getting around felt safe, straightforward, and visitor-friendly, which made it easier to relax and focus on how good I felt.

The kindness of people here turned the trip from good to unforgettable. The spa staff in Herradura treated me like family, offering tea and soft conversation along with my treatment. Surf instructors cheered on every attempt, even when I wiped out hard. Restaurant staff and shop owners asked how my day was going and offered suggestions for what to do next, always with genuine smiles.

At night, I got to decide what “fun” looked like. Some evenings I chose an early dinner and a quiet drink while listening to live music. Other nights I leaned into Jaco’s dance clubs, casinos, and beach parties, always surrounded by a mix of locals and travelers who seemed just as happy to be there as I was. Even walking home late, I felt safe and comfortable, with plenty of people out and about.

By the time I left, I felt both energized and rested—something I don’t say often after vacation. Jaco’s combination of waves, wellness options, nightlife, mountains, rainforest, and easy access to nearby gems like Herradura, Tarcoles, Quepos, and Manuel Antonio makes it the kind of place I know I’ll return to whenever I need a full mind-and-body reset.
