I’m Patrick Hughes, 40, and Jaco Beach is where I finally understood what “pura vida” really feels like in day-to-day life. I wanted a place where I could slow down, surf, explore a bit, and still get a taste of nightlife. Jaco gave me all of that, wrapped in warm air and green hills. I stayed in a Downtown Jaco Beach Airbnb Apartment that kept everything—beach, restaurants, casinos, and tour pickups—within easy reach.

Four experiences shaped my time here: Surfing on Jaco Beach, an eye-opening Jungle Crocodile Safari Tour, a visit to Pura Vida Gardens and Waterfalls, and a laid-back evening at Green Room Restaurant. Surfing got me hooked on early mornings and saltwater, the crocodile tour near Tarcoles showed me the wild side of Costa Rica’s rivers, and Pura Vida Gardens was so lush and photogenic it felt like stepping into a postcard.

Days started simple and slow. I’d walk along Jaco Beach at sunrise, watch surfers warming up and locals walking dogs, and feel the mountains and rainforest at my back. From there, I picked a direction. Some days meant surf sessions and casual lunches in town, while others meant taxis and Ubers to Herradura and the Los Sueños marina or buses farther down the coast toward Esterillos and Bejuco. Getting around was never stressful—everyone I dealt with in taxis, Ubers, and buses was friendly, patient, and happy to help with directions.

The kindness and openness of people here is what really sold me on the “pura vida” idea. Surf instructors were genuinely excited every time I made even a small improvement. Guides on the crocodile and garden tours clearly loved what they do, sharing stories and information in a way that made the whole region feel alive. Restaurant staff recognized me after a couple of visits and asked about my day, recommending favorite spots in and around Jaco and even up toward Quepos and Manuel Antonio.

Nights were as calm or as wild as I wanted them to be. Some evenings I just sat at a beach bar with a cold drink, listening to live music and watching the last light fade over the Pacific. Other nights I went into full vacation mode with casinos, clubs, and late walks along the main strip. Even when I stayed out late, I felt safe walking back to my apartment. The town stayed active and friendly after dark, with people laughing in doorways, music in the distance, and the ocean never far away.

By the end of my stay, I realized Jaco had changed my internal pace. The combination of beach, rainforest, mountains, day trips, nightlife, and truly welcoming people made it easy to live in the moment. Now, whenever I catch myself getting too stressed at home, I think about those mornings on Jaco Beach and those nights under the Central Pacific sky—and start planning my next trip back.
